Experience Community!
Experience Community ! We belong to a community and with each of us helping each other, we build community and unity that all may have a better quality of life. There are growing numbers of seniors in our community who struggle to make ends meet
,often going with out necessities like food to purchase medicine and pay the rent. Many
seniors live alone or have a caregiver and have physical
limitations and are less mobile that they use to be. Because of
these limitations many seniors never ask for assistance from a main food program.
These are just a few of the reasons we make it easier for them with in-home interviews and deliveries.
Your community needs some new seasoning. Got salt? Be salt! Food Assistance, Inc . is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, charitable, community outreach program to assist those who need food assistance.
The Groceries on Wheels mission is to offer food, friendship and
hope to improve health and wellness to seniors with low
incomes. Our project focus is assisting our senior neighbors 55+ and grandparents raising grandchildren who are on low fixed incomes needing food delivery.
Once a month we will be delivering food, friendship, and hope. These groceries are at no charge to the recipients. You and your children can be a blessing and receive a blessing by spending just 15 minutes,
more or less, with each recipient when you deliver their food. Take the kids to see and meet some of our "hidden national treasures."
Information on seniors from two reports: “Hunger and Food Insecurity Among the Elderly” and “Hunger Today in North Carolina .” “The growth rate of the 65+ population 2000-2020 will be 87.7%. As of today's date there are 49,476 seniors 60+ living in Guilford County . By 2010 this number will grow to 65,474. The Food Bank of North Western North
Carolina reports that 19.5% of older adults live in poverty estimating that by 2010 approximately 12,767 in Guilford County would fall
at possible poverty or near poverty levels. Housing issues from that same survey said that for those assisted 50% choose between food and rent/mortgage/medicine.”
In Guilford County there are 7,300 grandparents raising 6,000 grandchildren under 18 years of age. Food Security Institute, Center on Hunger and Poverty, The Heller Graduate School for Social Policy and Management and Brandeis University brief reports: “by 2010, the 65+ population is expected to more than double to about 70 million people, representing 20% of the entire U.S. population . A significant number of elderly face poverty at some time during their lifetimes. The probability of a person experiencing a year below the poverty line at some point between the ages of 60 and 90 is 40%.
About 1 out of every 2 people will fall below 125% of the poverty line for one year during this period. By 2010 approximately 12,767 in Guilford County would fall at or near poverty levels. Ensuring adequate food and nutrition is essential to the prevention or delay of chronic-disease and disease disabilities among seniors.” A year in a nursing home averages around $40,000; a year's worth of meals, $1,325.”
Every dollar donated by individuals goes to purchase food and personal items for our participants. Each $20 donated can purchase $111.11 worth of food.
